5 Inspiring Movies About Strong Women

Some days we need a little reminding of how great we as women can be and that there are no limits to what we can achieve if we are willing to put our minds to it. So, if you’re looking for some escapism coupled with some strong female inspiration then why not turn to these big screen pleasers featuring fierce female leads.

  1. Coco before Chanel (2009)

This biographical drama is a story about Coco Chanel’s struggles as well as her success. Placed in an orphanage with her sister, by her father, who then disappears, we see that this unfavourable start doesn’t stop Gabrielle Chanel (Audrey Tautou) from climbing the ladder and becoming a respected designer.

  1. The Blind Side (2009)

Based on a true story, this film is one to watch for the feel-good factor. Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock) shows her strength through her loving nature, when she opens her home to a homeless teen who then goes on to become an all American football player. This is more than a wealthy white Southern family adopting a black homeless teen; this is a story about finding strength in humanity.

  1. Colour Purple (1985)

This historical drama is an all-time favourite. This film follows the life of Celie (Whoopi Goldberg) an African-American woman who suffers years of abuse throughout her life, but preservers with the hope of being reunited with her sister, who she’d been separated from at childhood. Celie is the epitome of strong.

  1. Million Dollar Baby (2004)

This emotional and inspiring drama depicts a tale of one woman’s perseverance to follow her dream of becoming a boxer in her early 30s. Maggie Fitzgerald (Hiliary Swank) has to overcome the doubts of many, but never stops believing in herself or her dream.

  1. Erin Brockovich (2000)

If you’re circumstances are looking a little unfavourable then this movie will speak to you as you’ll watch how Erin (Julia Roberts), an unemployed single mother of three, turns things around not only for herself and kids, but for an entire neighbourhood of families too.
